Four people, including two children, have been killed after a tipper truck carrying sand crashed into a hair salon at Kumawu in the Ashanti Region, raising renewed safety concerns among residents.
The accident occurred on Saturday, January 17, when the heavy-duty truck, which was transporting sand from an ongoing road construction site, reportedly lost control, veered off the road and ploughed into a container structure being used as a salon.
Those who lost their lives were the salon owner, her two children, and a customer who was inside the salon at the time of the incident. All four died instantly due to the impact. Four other people, including the truck driver, sustained varying degrees of injury.
Health officials say one of the critically injured victims has been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for specialised treatment, while the remaining injured persons are receiving care at the Kumawu Government Hospital.
This incident marks the second accident involving a truck belonging to the same construction company working on the Kumawu road project. In a previous case, one of the company’s trucks crashed into a mosque, though no casualties were reported.
The latest tragedy has intensified calls from the community for stricter safety measures at the construction site to prevent further loss of life.
