Two people have lost their lives and several others sustained injuries following violent clashes during the Homowo Kpokpoi Sprinkling Ceremony in the Teshie Traditional Area on Tuesday, August 26.

The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Eddy Blessing and 27-year-old Patrick Maamah Martey Fio, were pronounced dead on arrival at Lekma Hospital after suffering gunshot wounds. Several others are receiving medical care, with one victim reported to be in critical condition.

According to the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) of the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly, the disturbances began in the early hours of the ceremony when rival groups disrupted the otherwise peaceful celebrations. Stones were thrown, and sporadic gunshots were fired, prompting a swift police response.

Although calm was briefly restored to allow Paramount Chief Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akonfra III to perform traditional rites, renewed confrontations broke out later in the morning. This time, the clashes were linked to factions loyal to different traditional leaders.

The violence sparked panic at local hospitals as relatives rushed to check on injured family members. Police and health officials, however, managed to restore order at the emergency units. Normalcy has since returned to the community.

MUSEC announced that investigations are underway to track down those responsible, assuring the public that perpetrators will face the full consequences of the law.

The council extended its condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. It further appealed to residents and traditional factions in Teshie to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to ensure lasting peace in the area.
