Ghana’s Black Stars returned to winning ways in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a hard fought victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8.

Alexander Djiku netted the decisive goal in the 49th minute, capitalizing on a Jordan Ayew cross to seal all three points for Otto Addo’s side.

The head coach made four changes to the lineup that faced Chad, introducing Djiku, Mohammed Salisu, Thomas Partey, and Kwasi Sibo. The first half produced limited chances, with Mali registering the only shot on target. Ghana, however, came closest when Antoine Semenyo narrowly missed the post after a fine run and pass from Mohammed Kudus.

Three minutes into the second half, Ghana finally broke the deadlock. A corner created by Caleb Yirenkyi’s strike, which rattled the crossbar, eventually set up the opportunity for Djiku to finish clinically.

Mali pressed for an equalizer, forcing goalkeeper Benjamin Asare into a string of important saves, while defensive partners Djiku and Salisu stood firm with crucial clearances. Partey also came to the rescue with a vital clearance after a misjudgment by Asare.

Despite Mali’s late pressure, Ghana held their ground to secure the win. The result lifts the Black Stars three points clear at the top of Group I, ahead of Madagascar, as they look forward to the next round of qualifiers
