Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu says the Akufo-Addo Bawumia administration plunged Ghana into economic crisis due to a lack of fiscal discipline and poor management of public funds.
According to the Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP, the previous government’s record was marked by excessive spending and weak financial controls, which ultimately saddled the country with unsustainable debt.
Speaking on PM Express on Tuesday, he contrasted that era with the current administration, which he said is guided by strict spending discipline.
“What has defined the performance of this government is discipline fiscal discipline,” he stated.
He noted that the principle applies in everyday life as well. “Even in our own lives, if you live beyond your means, you will always be in debt.”
The MP argued that the New Patriotic Party administration failed this fundamental test.
“Everybody knows that the problem of the NPP though previous governments admittedly had similar issues was that they were indisciplined in managing the fiscal affairs of the Ghanaian economy,” he said.
His remarks come amid ongoing national debate over Ghana’s fiscal trajectory. Critics of the Akufo-Addo Bawumia era have long cited excessive borrowing, uncontrolled expenditure, and lax oversight as key contributors to the country’s economic downturn.
Supporters of the former administration, however, often attribute the crisis to external shocks. But Kwakye Ofosu insisted the root cause was internal mismanagement and entirely preventable.
He stressed that fiscal restraint is now central to the government’s strategy to restore stability, strengthen the cedi, and rebuild trust with international partners as Ghana continues its recovery efforts.
