Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away.
He died on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in Kumasi at the age of 66. The news was confirmed to Myjoyonline.com by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis. Further details surrounding his death are yet to be officially disclosed.
His passing comes barely a month after the death of Maame Tiwa, a prominent member and key pillar of the Asomafo music group, a loss that profoundly affected the gospel music fraternity.
Yaw Sarpong had battled ill health for several years, which occasionally led him to step back from public performances as he focused on treatment and recovery.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s gospel music history, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, a group that helped shape the sound and structure of modern Akan gospel music. The group was renowned for its strong lyrical depth and disciplined musical style firmly rooted in Christian doctrine.
Over the decades, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo produced numerous iconic gospel songs, including Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, many of which remain staples in churches across Ghana.
In recognition of his immense contribution to gospel music, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
