The Asokwa Circuit Court has sentenced a commercial motorcycle rider captured on CCTV stealing from a shop to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

Emmanuel Asamoah, 22, pleaded guilty to unlawfully entering the shop of Madam Ama Kyerewaa and stealing a total of GH¢80,000.

Presiding Judge Fred Obikyere noted that Asamoah was young, a first-time offender, had not wasted the Court’s time by admitting the offence, and had already made part payment of the stolen amount, with a pledge to repay GH¢55,000 as the balance.

According to ASP Stephen Ofori, Madam Kyerewaa a midwife residing at Aputuogya operates the Amful Metal shop at Suame-Magazine in Kumasi with her husband, Mr. Ransford Fosu, who served as a witness in the case.

He explained that Asamoah, a tricycle (Aboboyaa) rider from Old Suame, often parked in front of the shop while waiting to transport customers’ metal pipes.

On October 31, 2025, at around 4 p.m., the complainant detected that GH¢9,000 had gone missing from her handbag in the shop. A search of all workers and their belongings yielded nothing.

ASP Ofori said the complainant later reviewed CCTV footage, which clearly showed Asamoah stealing cash from her handbag and from a drawer. She subsequently lodged a complaint with the Police, leading to his arrest.

During investigations, Asamoah confessed in his cautioned statement to stealing a total of GH¢80,000 over a two-month period. Police recovered GH¢20,000 from him during the probe.

He was then charged and arraigned before the Court, resulting in his conviction and sentence.
