The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has scheduled a parliamentary by-election in the Tamale Central Constituency for September 30, 2025, following the sudden passing of sitting MP, Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.
In a statement released today [August 19], the EC explained that the by-election is in line with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, which requires a new representative to be elected when a parliamentary seat becomes vacant.

Aspiring candidates can download nomination forms from the Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) starting today until September 10, 2025.
Completed forms must be submitted to the EC’s Tamale Metropolitan Office between September 8 and September 10, during the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm daily.
The EC has outlined the following requirements for nominations:
- Each candidate must be nominated by two registered voters and supported by 18 others in the constituency.
- Forms should be submitted in four copies (quadruplicate).
- Two recent passport-sized photos with a red background must be provided.
- Nomination forms must be delivered personally by the candidate or through their proposer or seconder.
Filing Fees
The filing fee has been set at GH¢10,000. However, in a move to encourage inclusivity, the EC has introduced a reduced fee of GH¢7,500 for female aspirants and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
EC’s Call to Order
Signed by EC Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa, the statement urged the public, political parties, and aspirants to take note of the timelines and guidelines as preparations begin to elect a new MP for Tamale Central.
