The Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, has confirmed that government has released a total of GH¢809 million to the contractor handling the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway project as of August 4, 2025.
The confirmation comes as contractors have officially returned to site, resuming much-needed repair works on the busy stretch — a major relief for commuters who have endured weeks of unbearable traffic congestion.
This update also comes against the backdrop of a one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which is due to expire on Wednesday, August 20. The Union had earlier threatened to suspend operations if government failed to ensure the resumption of work on the highway.
Speaking in an interview with Peace FM on Monday, August 18, Mr. Agyei stressed that the government had fully settled its financial obligations.
“We made partial payments on 24th July, another on 30th July, and the final payment on 4th August. Altogether, we have honoured the full amount of GH¢809 million as requested,” he explained.
With payments now cleared and work back underway, commuters and transport operators are hopeful that the long-awaited completion of the project will ease congestion and improve mobility on one of Accra’s most critical road networks.
