MTN Ghana announces shutdown of 2G and 3G services

MTN Ghana has announced that it will phase out its 2G and 3G networks gradually, allowing subscribers sufficient time to transition to newer technologies.

Speaking at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett acknowledged that a significant number of customers still rely on 2G and 3G services.

He explained that while some subscribers intentionally remain on these networks to manage their data usage, many others are limited by devices that are not compatible with 4G.

“Although 4G is widely available, a large proportion of our customers continue to use 3G. For some, it’s a matter of controlling data consumption, while others are constrained by the type of handsets they own,” Mr. Blewett noted.

He emphasized that MTN’s long term strategy is to enhance spectrum efficiency by eventually retiring the legacy networks. However, he assured that the transition would be carefully managed.

“We cannot simply switch off 2G and 3G without first ensuring that affordable 4G devices are accessible. Doing so would risk excluding many Ghanaians,” he cautioned.
