Xabi Alonso has stepped down as head coach of Real Madrid.
The club confirmed the decision on Monday in a statement issued following Sunday’s Supercopa de España final defeat to Barcelona. Real Madrid said the separation was reached by mutual agreement.
“Real Madrid C. F. wishes to announce that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his time as first-team coach to an end,” the statement read.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madridistas. He is a Real Madrid legend who has consistently represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.
“We thank Xabi Alonso and his entire coaching staff for their hard work and commitment and wish them every success in the next stage of their careers.”
Although reports indicate the club does not hold Alonso solely responsible for recent struggles, the board is understood to be dissatisfied with the team’s performances and overall image. Real Madrid currently sit four points behind league leaders Barcelona in La Liga.
There are also concerns that Alonso had lost the confidence of a significant section of the dressing room, with players reportedly failing to fully connect with his tactical ideas.
Former Real Madrid and Liverpool defender Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as head coach with immediate effect.
