Edward Kofi Omane Boamah (26 December 1974 – 6 August 2025) was a Ghanaian politician and physician who served as Minister for Defence from February 2025 until his death in a military helicopter crash on 6 August 2025.
He attended Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary, later studying medicine at the University of Ghana Medical School. He earned a Master’s in Health Policy Planning and Financing from the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
His political career included serving as:
- Deputy Minister for Environment, Science & Technology (2009–2012)
- Deputy Minister for Youth & Sports (2012–2013)
- Minister for Communications (2013–2017)
- Presidential Spokesperson (2014–2017)
He was appointed Minister for Defence in February 2025 and held the position until his passing.
Dr. Boamah’s earlier service included working with the World Health Organization in 2004 under the Expanded Programme on Immunisation, and being part of the medical rescue team during the 2001 Accra Sports Stadium disaster. He also served on the Ghana AIDS Commission Board (2014–2016) and as Vice Chair of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development.
On 6 August 2025, he died alongside seven others, including Minister Murtala Mohammed, when a Ghana Armed Forces Harbin Z-9 helicopter crashed in Adansi Akrofuom. There were no survivors.
