TikTok apologises after thousands in US report issues

TikTok’s new US owner has apologised to users after widespread technical issues disrupted the video-sharing platform over the weekend.

Outage-tracking website Downdetector recorded more than 600,000 reports of problems from TikTok users in the United States, with complaints continuing into Monday.

Users reported a range of issues, including videos repeatedly appearing on their “For You” pages, some content failing to load, and newly uploaded posts receiving “zero views.”

TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, which now oversees TikTok’s operations in the US, said the disruption was caused by a power outage at a US data centre affecting TikTok and other apps under its control.

“We’re working to restore our services following a power outage at a US data centre,” the company said in a post on X. “We’re working with our data centre partner to stabilise our service. We’re sorry for this disruption and hope to resolve it soon.”

Oracle, TikTok’s US data-centre partner, declined to comment on the outage. The cloud-computing firm recently assumed a larger role in TikTok’s American operations under a deal finalised last Thursday to secure the app’s future in the US.

The technical problems triggered speculation among users that the glitches could be linked to TikTok’s new ownership or anticipated changes to the US version of the app’s algorithm.

According to Downdetector, 663,061 reports were logged between Saturday evening and Monday, with some users describing a “total outage.” While reports briefly declined overnight on Sunday, they rose again on Monday as users continued to experience problems.

CapCut, a video-editing app owned by TikTok, also recorded thousands of outage reports over the same period.

Frustrated users took to rival platforms to complain. One user on X wrote: “Is anyone else’s TikTok extremely slow, showing old videos, not loading search results, and failing to load certain content?”

Others said they were unable to access creator tools, including features that show advertising revenue earned from popular posts. Some creators also reported unusually low engagement, with uploaded videos remaining stuck at zero views.
