Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that the United States government has assured Ghana it will not obstruct ongoing extradition efforts involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.

Mr Ofori-Atta was detained in the United States in January 2026 following a formal extradition request by Ghana in connection with corruption and procurement-related charges filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor. He remains in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as legal proceedings continue to determine both his immigration status and the extradition request.

Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, who was convicted in Ghana in 2024 for causing financial loss to the state, is also the subject of ongoing extradition proceedings. According to the Attorney General, a formal request submitted to the US Department of Justice in mid-2024 is still under review, pending completion of the required legal processes.

Mr Ablakwa made the disclosure during a bilateral meeting in Accra with the Acting US Ambassador to Ghana, Rolf Olson, and his delegation. He said the United States had reaffirmed its commitment to bilateral cooperation and clarified that its engagement would not undermine judicial processes or impede Ghana’s legal efforts.

“Ghana and the United States commended the significant improvement in security and law enforcement cooperation, which led to the extradition of nine suspects from Ghana to the United States in 2025, as well as ongoing efforts to return two Ghanaians of high interest from the US to Ghana,” he stated.

He added that the US government had given firm assurances that, without prejudice to judicial procedures, it would not stand in the way of Ghana’s attempts to secure the return of Ken Ofori-Atta and Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.

The assurance is expected to strengthen confidence in US Ghana legal and security cooperation as both extradition cases proceed through their respective legal channels.
