The Leukaemia Project Foundation (LPF), in partnership with the Accra Polo Club, will host the Captain’s Cup Polo Tournament from 3rd to 7th September 2025. The event is aimed at raising funds for Ghana’s first ever Centre for Haematology and Clinical Genetics at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The tournament forms part of LPF’s activities for Leukaemia Month, observed globally every September, and will bring together sponsors, supporters, and the polo community to raise awareness and support for the fight against blood related disorders.
“Leukaemia Month reminds us of the urgent need for improved healthcare access for patients battling blood disorders in Ghana,” said Gerard Hillary Osei Boakye, President of LPF.
He added that the Captain’s Cup Polo Tournament is not only about the sport but also about creating national awareness and driving resources towards establishing a world-class treatment and research centre at KBTH. “With the continued support of our partners and sponsors, we are confident this vision will become a reality saving countless lives,” he said.
Since its inception in 2006, LPF has championed advocacy, patient support, and healthcare development for leukaemia and related conditions. The Foundation’s mission, it emphasized, “thrives on the generosity and collaboration of dedicated individuals and institutions.”
Among the key benefactors supporting this vision are Ecobank Ghana, Stanbic Bank, Engineers and Planners, Rana Motors, Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Vanguard Assurance, Caitec Motors, Chase Petroleum, Kofi Ababio and Sons, Mrs. Adu Wusu, Automotive Springs, and Allied Oil.
The Foundation also acknowledged the crucial role of the Edward Osei Boakye Trust Fund and its Trustees, whose commitment has been central to the administrative, technical, and architectural groundwork for the new Centre.
In addition to the Polo Tournament, LPF has scheduled an Operatic and Choral Concert in November 2025 to raise further funds.
“As we prepare to break ground for construction, we call on individuals, institutions, and corporate bodies to support this cause with both cash and in-kind contributions. Together, we can make this life-saving vision a reality,” the Foundation appealed.
