Thousands of mourners gathered at Accra’s Independence Square on Saturday, August 30, 2025, to mark the one-week observance of Ghana’s beloved highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.
The ceremony was originally scheduled to take place at the University of Ghana Stadium but was later moved to Independence Square due to a noise-making ban in the La Traditional Area.
Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta in the Ashanti Region, Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025, at the age of 60, after a short illness at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra.
The observance was filled with emotion and nostalgia, as mourners joined in singing along to some of his greatest hits, including Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asem, and Theresa. The event served as both a moment of grief and a celebration of the extraordinary musical legacy he left behind.
Organized by the Creative Arts Agency in collaboration with the Fosu family, the gathering formed part of a series of commemorative events honoring Daddy Lumba’s life and contributions to Ghanaian music.
Details of the final funeral rites, which will take place in Kumasi, are expected to be announced soon.
